3D Guidelines

Creating accurate 3D product customization requires both CAD files which are derived from physical samples. This guide covers what you should send us:

  1. CAD files (file format).

  2. Physical samples.

These components ensure we develop a precise digital representation of your products.

CAD Files (Optional)

While not required, existing CAD models of your products can help accelerate the development process. If you already have 3D digital files of your products, these can serve as a starting point for the customization interface.

File format required for 3D presentation

  • Prefered: STEP (.stp).

  • Other Acceptable Formats: .igs (surface modeling), .obj (3D rendering), and .dwg/.dxf (2D/limited 3D). Consult VU Customs for additional acceptable formats.

Email the CAD files to your assigned project manager if you already have them. We will still need physical samples associated to each CAD file.

Physical Samples

We use physical samples to create accurate 3D models of your products. Important notes:

  • Physical Samples are required when CADs are not available or soft-good products are being modeled

  • Unique samples are needed when product geometry (shape/structure) changes

  • Different color variants of the same product shape do not require additional samples

  • We use these samples to create precise 3D CAD models for the customizer

Cover

Base Products

  • One sample of each base product in standard configuration

  • All available size variations if they will be modelled.

Cover

Customization Components

  • Every variant of interchangeable parts (e.g., different cap styles, straps, closures)

  • Samples showing different finish options (matte, glossy, textured)

Special Requirements by Product Type

  • Send reference samples that demonstrate the intended display shape

  • Include clear documentation of correct folding and positioning methods

  • Provide a visual mockup showing the exact way the product should be shaped and positioned

  • Include any relevant display forms (e.g., foot forms for socks, mannequins for apparel, or inner structures for headcovers)

For example: Headcovers, sandal straps, pillow cases, etc.

Sample Documentation Requirements

Each physical sample must be accompanied by:

  • Product name (required) and SKU (optional)

  • Special handling or display instructions

  • Notes on any unique characteristics or requirements

  • Customization components: If the item is not easily identified, provide a reference to its entry in the product customization list.

Next Steps

Before shipping your samples, create a detailed inventory list that maps each item to your customization list. Package your samples carefully and ship them to the address provided by your VU Custom project manager. Once shipped, notify your project manager so they can track the delivery and ensure proper handling upon arrival. Following these guidelines will help us efficiently create accurate 3D models and launch your customization program.

Once your samples are received, our team will prepare a detailed presentation covering project timeline and associated costs.
